Edmondson’s Family Garden

When did you start growing food and why did you become involved with Growing Neighbors?

We started growing food in our yard about 15 years ago. We started out with a few strawberry plants and then moved on to dabbling with things like tomatoes and zucchini. We’ve been working with GN from the beginning back in the fall of ’16.

What do you like to grow?

We love to grow and eat fruit and tried adding a pear tree this year. It’s struggling, but we’re getting more raspberries and apples this year. We’re trying out more native plants and wanting to keep adding more herbs and various edible perennials such as walking onions. We really enjoyed putting an arched trellis in this year between our kids’ 2 raised beds.

What is your favorite dish to cook from your fresh produce/garden goods?

We love Rachel’s chocolate zucchini cake, but more often enjoy fresh produce from the garden just raw such as snap peas, cherry tomatoes, berries, lettuce, carrots, and cucumbers. Kale is most often enjoyed in smoothies and herbs in various dishes here and there 🙂

Who else is involved in the farmyard & related neighbor connections (i.e. friends, family, neighbors)?

We have had some neighbors help us harvest, various others have helped with special projects like setting up irrigation, getting wood chips or compost delivered, and planting parties. We love growing specific things that our neighbors enjoy. One especially likes very large zucchini, one spicy peppers, and several enjoy the strawberries!

Would you like to have neighbors contact you to help out or to harvest and enjoy the produce?

We always have excess tomatoesWe would love to hear from neighbors that would like to help out, enjoy some produce, or get help starting to grow and share food in their own yards.
